Louis Chevrolet (1878-1941) was a fearless automobile racer who displayed little concern for his own safety when the outcome of a race was in doubt. Chevrolet's driving skills attracted the attention of auto executive, William Durant. The two men combined their talents to form the Chevrolet Motor Company. Chevrolet designed a stylish six-cylinder touring car, which became an immediate marketing success and proved that his design abilities matched his racing skills.

Louis Joseph Chevrolet was born on December 25, 1878 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He was the second son of Joseph Felician Chevrolet, a watch and clockmaker, and Angelina Marie (Mahon) Chevrolet. Young Louis grew up with six brothers and sisters. The family moved to Beaune, a small town in the Burgundy region of France, when Louis was about six. His father taught him basic mechanical skills and stressed the importance of precision in the manufacture of machine parts, which later contributed to his skill as an engine designer. To help with the family finances, Chevrolet got a job as a guide in a local wine cellar. Deciding that the method of decanting wine from one cask to another was too slow, Chevrolet designed a wine barrel pump which brought him local accolades and was used in the Burgundy region for decades.

Bicycle racing was a great weekend sport in Beaune and this is where Chevrolet developed his interest in speed. He experimented with gear ratios until he found the one best suited to his physical ability. While still in his teens and just out of grammar school, Chevrolet became an apprentice in a bicycle shop. The owner had a 1.25 bhp de Dion tricycle that was usually broken. Chevrolet bought repair manuals and worked on the bike in his spare time. He soon found the trouble, sent away for parts from the manufacturer, and had it in working order. Next he began building bicycles in the winter and selling them in the summer to tourists under the name Frontenac, after the seventeenth century governor of France's North American colonies. He later used the same name in America for the automobile company he began. About this time, Chevrolet saw his first automobile and was fascinated with the new invention.

His bicycle manufacturing business was not very successful, and Chevrolet became an apprentice at the Darracq, Hotchkiss, and Dion Bouton auto factories. In 1898,
he got a job with the Mors Auto Company, and was sent to an auto dealership in Montreal, Canada, in 1899, at the age of twenty-one. Chevrolet worked as a chauffeur-mechanic for six months and then moved to Brooklyn, New York. He worked for the DeDion Bouton Motorette Company and soon was given the opportunity to be a substitute racecar driver for Fiat in New York City. In 1901, after his father's death, he brought the rest of his family to America. Chevrolet became a citizen in 1915.

Trouble (3:32) It was nearly twenty five years ago that a friend insisted that I accompany him to a pub in New Cross, South East London, to see a duo called The Two Pete’s. Comprising a blind keyboard player with more synths than Rick Wakeman and a drummer with a kit matched in scale only by his beard, my friend assured me that The Two Pete’s launched themselves at popular classics with such individuality and gusto that a good night out was guaranteed. My friend was not wrong, as the results on this album will attest. Recorded before the drinkers and ably supported by a selection of guest singers drawn from the crowd, the performances veer from the wayward to the excruciating to the downright bizarre. However, the warmth and the enthusiasm of all concerned is self evident and I can’t help but find myself endeared to such individual interpretations, much like viewing a small child taking it’s first steps and repeatedly falling over. There are far too many highlights to list, but I have a particular fondness for the good kicking meted out to Macarthur Park - the helpful addition of a Prog Rock style synth solo and a segue into Popcorn surely improve on the original. Of particular note is the genuine technical skill of the keyboard player, however misguided the end results. He would play Moog bass pedals with his feet, simultaneously switching from keyboard to keyboard while singing. Tricky to do sighted, let alone blind. The drummer is also worthy of mention for his hyperactive snare technique. He is of the ‘if it’s not moving hit it’ school of drumming. Respect. As far as I can ascertain, The Two Pete’s still perform in the pub and must be in their sixties by now. I hope ‘Live At The Ever New Montague Arms’ gives you as much ‘pleasure’ as it has my friends and I over the years. Apparently there is a volume 2 knocking around as well, although one can have too much of a good thing. - Contributed by: Scott Taylor Media: LP Album: Live At The Ever New Montague Arms Date: 1981

Chevrolet phone service stands the test of time

The line handles more than four million calls during a typical year, - says Janice McKenna, president of Warne/McKenna Advertising. The agency has handled East Syracuse Chevrolet’s marketing since 1977.

East Syracuse Chevrolet has sponsored the service since 1989 when a fortuitous telephone call led to a quick decision. That year, the bank that had sponsored the line decided to end its deal. The company that operates the time and temperature service, ETC-Audichron, called East Syracuse Chevrolet to see if the dealership would be interested in taking over sponsorship. ETC didn’t have to wait long for an answer.

“Within 15 minutes of receiving the call,” McKenna recalls, “East Syracuse Chevrolet was the new sponsor. I knew how valued the service is in this market, and I wasn’t about to let it go.”

For a monthly fee of $1,500, ETC’s Audichron model 210B machine delivers the six-second time and temperature message to up to 20 callers simultaneously. Because the information comes after the brief advertisement, every caller hears the East Syracuse Chevrolet message, says McKenna.

Sometimes, especially during weather extremes, the Audichron 210B receives more than 20 calls at a time, leading to dropped calls for some. During particular periods of weather interest, the system can receive 16,000 calls per day, says McKenna.

Chevy cranks it up - WIP - Chevrolet Motor Div.’s model SS - Brief Article

The vehicle architecture is body-frame-integral, with a steel body and aluminum chassis. The vehicle is 198.9-in. long with a short front overhang; the wheelbase is 121 in. The vehicle is 76-in, wide, with the fenders providing what can be honestly described as “muscular” bulges over the 21-in. (front) and 22-in. (rear) wheels.

Speaking of the interior, Bryan Nesbitt, GM’s executive director of design, body-frame-integral, noted, “The interior seat upholstery mixes the off-white leather with a modern woven, hounds-tooth check vinyl reminiscent of the SS cars of the past.” Beside the checked vinyl, “SS” logo, and the Victory Red exterior, the only thing that this concept has with the SS models of yore are four tires. This is a car for tomorrow, not yesterday.

2002 Chevrolet Cruze - Cars Worth Nothing - Brief Article - Product/Service Evaluation

Actually the Cruze is what General Motors calls a compact lifestyle vehicle. Developed with alliance partner Suzuki, the Cruze was built for Japan. where the smaller the cars are, the better. It is also marketed under the Suzuki Arena name.

What I like about the Cruze is its high content and high quality feel. In the U.S., small usually means chintzy so I didn’t expect much. But the Cruze sells in one of the largest segments in Japan and its high content helps set it apart.

First on the list is an active four-wheel-drive system coupled with an electromagnetic control device (EMCD), which Is an electronically controlled coupling system.

In the interior of the vehicle, the high content and high quality continues. GM says the inside of the Cruze was designed to have a distinct American look. What developed was an instrument panel that can be described as both elegant and sporty with a black and silver two-tone arrangement.

Under the hood is a peppy 1 1.5L new generation all-aluminum DOHC engine. This powerplant has Variable Valve Timing (VVT) for high output and high fuel efficiency. A new four speed automatic transmission is standard and appropriate for Japan’s automatic preference.
