The new design features a broader array of materials in its powertrain components, body, suspension system and other subassemblies than any of GM’s pickups have had in the past.
GM sources said 89 percent is the highest recyclability rating for any GM light-duty truck since materials recovery and reuse became an important issue in the auto business early this decade.
North American-built cars and trucks were considered at that time to be about 75percent recyclable.
The recyclability of the new Chevy Silverados also is significantly higher that the target of 80 percent established for the high-mileage “supercars” of the future being developed by U.S. automakers under the standards established by the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV).
The restyled and re-engineered Silverados, which have longer, roomier cabs than their predecessors, have many features, such as plastic components, long seat cushions and backs, seals, sealers, waxes and certain other materials, that are difficult or impossible to reclaim.
Despite this, the Chevy trucks-and their Sierra model counterparts in the GMC pickup line–employ reusable materials wherever possible.
