Adorned in bright yellow, the SSR was like a people magnet when I tested it. A traffic cop stopped me to marvel over it. People jaywalked, gathered in parking lots and otherwise swamped me with questions — and compliments.
Like many shiny, showy things, the SSR isn’t particularly practical. The cockpit is snug — don’t try to adjust the seats with the door closed. There’s little room for your hands. The bins in the doors are shallow with room for little more than pencils.
Also, the pickup bed is covered by a steel canopy that can’t be removed, so heaven help you if anything rolls back to the dark recesses of the truck bed.

The joy of the SSR is that it brings the fun of driving and cruising back to the public as few things on wheels do. And it’s a rolling marketing lesson to automakers everywhere — Chevy’s selling out of these because they are unique, fun to look at and terrific collectors’ items.
None of this comes cheap. Base price for this not-so-little motorized bauble is a cool $41,370.
The SSR is powered by a 5.3-liter, 300-horsepower V-8 that will hit 60 in 7.5 seconds. And if you have any doubt that you’re accelerating, the deep growl and hearty burbling from dual exhaust extensions will remind you.
